P.niger not eating...

Post by TalenT »

...And it haven't eaten anything for over a week, when we got it.
Yesterday i dropped some tetratabs right in front of its nose, one of them slid right in under (and in direct contact with) it's mouth, but nothing! So far i've tried tetratabs, hikari pellets, shrimps and artemia. After a few minutes, anything i try to feed him gets eaten by the Geophagus sp. that are his tankmates. They even took the tetratab that was right under it's nose. He's just laying there like a log. I've seen more activity from Chaca cats :) Can you guys help me with some advice?

try a nightly feed!

it probably doesn't feel at home yet, so it doesn't move. not moving is a form of camouflage!
put in some food after lights-out.

just a bit, not too much.

some other foods that might be a bit more familiar for him:
snails, bloodworms (red mosquitolarvae), daphnia, tubifex, peas (nigers love peas), spinache, small earthworms, black mosquitolarvae.

all this marine food is probably strange for him; shrimps, artemia and the like.

a wee bit of tubifex in a night-feed will burrow in the gravel or sand.

your niger will get a nice jumpstart from the smell, and if he doesn't like it, the Geophagus will have a field day; Earth-eaters loooooove digging for worms! partt of their natural behaviour, and hence one of the few cichlids wich are perfectly safe with tubifex and bloodworms.
