Hi there,
I am new the forum. What I would like to know is....I have a 70 gallon tank...I want to grow a big catfish. What kind should I get that will grow as big as my tank will allow yet will not disturb the other fish....the smallest fish I have in there are pltties and mollies. Also, I hope its an easy fish to come by!! lol
Tanks Everyone
it all depends on.. how much you are willing to pay out and how much experience you have,
and be careful some LFS may well sell you the wrong thing claiming that they will co-habit with your platies and mollies just to get your money off you. and some of the larger cats tend to have specific
dietry requirements . some may well eat your platies and mollies so i would tend to go for something like these, for starters
brochis multiradiatus
dianema urostriata
hoplosternum thoracatum
Please, follow Medaka's advise about local fish stores!!!!
It sounds as if you may have a community setting. Can you please tell me how big is big for you? There are catfish that can reach 1" and there are cats that can reach 4'-0" or even larger.(please correct me if I'm wrong, anybody). Also, certain species have certain water requirements. These requirements may not jibe with what you already have. Platties usually like their pH a little higher. Mollies are usually on the brackish side.
I'm just one year into the hobby. Here's what I'm still doing. Reading! On-line and in books. Then ask, ask, ask. Just as you are doing now. Ask folks who have the species you are thinking of purchasing. What have been their experiences? (and not just the sales person)
For me, I've discovered that I enjoy smaller catfish, and smaller fish in general. I'm dreaming of my larger tank. Congrats on yours!
