Why the *?

I have a feeling I'm going to sound like an utter fool when I find out the answer to this, but - why is pl*co often spelled with the asterisk? Is it an obscenity in some language or is it a form of designation or what? Sorry for the dumb question, I'm pretty much ignorant to this stuff.

doh! I'm usually the one yelling at people for not reading faqs. I'm sorry about that. That's a pretty funny superstition. I'll have to remember that when I get some plecs.
