alder cones?

Post by syno321 »

At the recent Catfish comvention in Maryland, I believe it was Ingo who spoke of using alder cones as fungicide when hatching eggs. This is the first time I have heard of this, and was wondering where one could obtain some of these? They may very well be accessable here, but I'm not an arborist. Does anyone know the species name of the tree? Perhaps I can contact local tree experts and see if we have them here.

Hi syno321

The tree is the Alnus gutinosa, it is probably the most commonest waterside trees in the UK and is found on the banks of rivers and streams.

Interesting stuff, does anyone know the chemicals they contain that are the active ingredients?

Being right in the middle of their American distribution myself, I'd be glad to collect these for any interested folks when in season if they happen to be common around here (I know I've seen them before).

I have searched far and wide, with any and all arborists in my area, and there are no Alnus glutinosa that have been planted in this zone. I would much appreciate your (or anybody else's) offer. I'd like to get a dozen or so, to give them a try. Let me how you do as far as actually acquiring some. Thanks
