Catfish skull diagram

Post by shmea »

Hi everybody,
I am a student at the University of Victoria in BC, Canada. I am currently taking an advanced ichthyology class and one of the requirements is to prepare and label a fish skull. (In my case a catfish)

I am in the process of reassembling my skull but it would be really handy if I could find a labeled diagram (or even just a picture) of a catfish skull.

I figured that if anyone would know where I could find something like this it would be you guys.

Thanks!

Do you mean you need a skull diagram with all the bones labeled?

Ideally I would like a picture with all of the skull bones labeled but I know that is a pretty tall order.

Thank you so much for the link. That is great. I have spent hours searching the internet and couldn't find anything nearly as good!

Again, thank you so much! I will post a picture of my completed skull once I am done (if I can figure out how to do it!)

I hate to admit it but I purchased our little friend at an asian grocery store. It didn't have a species name but had the common name of Yellow catfish. I did some digging and the only fish that I could find with that common name that looked close to what I had was Pelteobagrus fulvidraco. It also mentioned that it was a major asian food fish which seemed to confirm my suspicions.

If you are correct and it is a clarias sp I hope my instructor doesn't know that!

The name "yellow catfish" is also apparently used for Clarias macrocephalus (at least that's what a Google search showed).

I was going by Fishbase which lists Clarias macrocephalus as the common name boadhead catfish. But I agree that Clarias macrocephalus definitely does look like my fish.

Could have used you when we were trying to figure out what it was.....Wish I had posted my picture earlier.
