Parasilurus ascotus predicting earthquakes

Post by Chrysichthys »

I don't have access to the articles listed here:
http://www.levity.com/mavericks/quake.htm
but was alerted to the subject by a snippet in the Times following the Indian Ocean quake. It would appear to be something unrelated to the Namazu myth.

Does anyone have information or comments to contribute?

This may help:

Noda, Y, S Egawa, T Nagao, 2004. History of the research project of Tokyo Metropolitan Fisheries Experiment Station on the relation between the behavior of catfish and earthquakes. Bulletin of Institute of Oceanic Research and Development Tokai University 25: 91-110.

I have no access to this, though.

I managed to find a secondhand account of the Hatai and Abe paper. Allegedly, catfish in tanks become more alarmed by tapping on the glass when an earthquake is imminent, compared to when one isn't. How this experiment could be set up when we can't predict earthquakes ourselves, I don't know.

EDIT: 'ascotus' appears to be a typo for 'asotus' in the link I gave.
