Fantasy fish tank--possible roommates?

Post by troi »

I am getting a small (1 to 1 1/2 inch) adonis soon. Given that if all goes well, this will end up a large and rambunctious fish needing a big tank and sturdy furniture. Could he live with Mother of Snails (Pseudodoras niger)catish, who needs similar accomodations?

My concern is that "Mom" is said to be peaceful and from what I have seen does spend a lot of time just hanging out quietly. Adonis is apparently the terror of the tank. Is there a problem in my fantasy tank here?

Providing enough room your fantasy tank will work out just fine. However, Pseudodoras niger will out grow just about any tank. I believe the mother of snails "key way mama" is Megalodoras uranoscopus which would go well with the adonis.

Thanks, Mark. this is (now) a fantasy, tho. I want the big floppy mouth and "ancient" disposition of the P. niger. I have known a largish (20ish inches) one for several years and love it dearly. I think the shop killed it. P. niger comes in smaller to a different LFS with a "tank buster" row from time to time.

Smallest acceptable tank for adults would be...? There is always the pond option, but I *think* adonis has been know to wander.

The two here (one is I think a P. holdeni, it has a different scute pattern) suck pellets or flake food out of a cupped hand. When they are feeding on floating food I can hear them from my office here (and that's 20 feet away through a closed door...)

Sound like Koi!
Was that your video footage I saw somewhere on the 'net? I think it was the MOS hand feeding. Definitely loud slurpping on the "soundtrack?"
What is it with BIG catfish? The red tail cats are friendly and curious, as well. Saw a 3 footer stick his nose right out of a small pond to visit with the customers in a (large) LFS once. The bigger, the smarter? The bigger, the easier trained?
1000 galls.
Heh. That's just a heated koi pond...maybe in a green house?
