sick cory

Post by kat31 »

I have a sick spotted cory. ph is 7-7.2 I have 4 danios 5 guppies and 3 neon tetra. I have live plants and temp 24 degrees c have had the tank for two years cory for 6-8 months recently had internal parasite problems with danios (bad batch from pet store) medicated tank with product starting with O (sorry have thrown out container). I was told at the pet store that this would not affect my cory and did not seem to at the time. Cory is now siting on bottom of tank normally swimming around quite active compared to my other cory that has gone to the big fish tank in the sky. Anyway this has only happened today fins are flat against body and not feeding no obvious sores or a redness etc. please help.

it's hard to say exactly from your description, but one thing that usually helps is to change water more frequently if the fish isn't feeling well.

You may want to check the water quality too:
Nitrate: should be below 25 ppm (ppm = mg/l).
Nitrite: should be zero.
Ammonia: should be zero.

If any of these values are higher than the "should be" values above, you need to change more water out of the tank, and perhaps also start looking for some source of pollution: uneaten food, dead fish, dead plants, etc.

With no obvious signs of illness, there's little that can be done to "fix" the problem other than the above water checking/fixing.

It is possible that your medication caused the "good bacteria" in the tank to take a hit, and the water-cleaning isn't working as well as it should. That can lead to "inactive fish", and eventually their death. Obviously, the more sensitive fish will suffer before the more hardy (like danios).

Thanks Matt,
I forgot to mention that I had done a water change on monday and the cory was starting to look sick on wednesday. I will get the water tested at my aquarium tonight but last time i checked amonia nitrate etc were all nil so I really dont know. but have looked at him this morning and still no better.
anymore suggestions would be appreciated.
also the rest of the fish except for the tetra seem to be around the top of the tank slightly more than usual.
