silica sand for breeding tank?

can silica sand be used in breeding tank?
i'm planning to add a very thin layer... or will this affect ph ? also is silica ok for cories?

If it's proper silica sand, which should then be SiO2, it shouldn't change the pH, because it's not soluble in water.

If it's "sharp" sand, it will be bad for cories in that it's destroying their barbels.
