Dragon Catfish?

Post by Katt66 »

My LFS got these in last week labeled as Dragon Catfish. He's about four inches long.

I think he's an Asian catfish of some kind. This is the closest match I could find while searching on the net. The site I found this pic on has it labeles as Pelteobagrus vachellii. I couldn't find any info on that catfish anywhere. I wonder if it's been renamed or moved to a different genus?

That's good news! They don't out grow aquariums at least. So according to the info, they're temperate fish. Does that mean I could put him in my Goldfish pond this spring and leave him in there permanantly? Our winters get fairly cold. In the mid teens or lower during the night sometimes and even down below zero very rarely. Would he be able to withstand temps like that? I always put a heater in the pond in the winter just to keep the water above freezing and keep a hole open for oxygen. Would this be okay for this catfish too or is that pushing it?

If you can maintain your goldfish in your pond in the winters, the catfish should not be a problem.
I would rather keep it in an unheated tank (indoors) than a pond, but that's just me.
