breeding two corydoras in same tank..

Post by Zoney »

I'm thinking of puttin my two species of corydoras in one tank, to try to get them to spawn. Is this just stupid? I have 3 C. oiapoquensis (can't get more :((( ), and 6 C. delphax. Thinking of putting them in one 63 l (16 gallon) tank.
Sorry for my english :P

Corys will hybridize. If you succeed in breeding and distributing them you will be doing a disservice to the hobby. There are many beautiful naturally occuring species and no need to create a new one.

I'm assuming you're not trying to crossbreed, but just want to save the space and only have one tank set up instead of two, or something like that?

I've kept C. pygmaeus and C. panda in a tank together to save space. No crossbreeding, wich I did't expect either, as these two species doesn't have much in common. But I found that when te pygmaeus spawned, the pandas would spawn right after. The spawning og one species triggered the spawning of another. This theory is also described in the "corycrumbs" on the Alloddballaquatics-website.

Ofcourse, if the two species you're suggesting will crossbreed, it's not a good idea.

hm i am not sure if they would cross breed or not but i am not really sure why people tend to act like if they did it would be terrible.

I definetely understand that you do not want any cross breeds getting into fish stores or anywhere but your own aquairum, but if it happens in your community tank and the fish will stay there untill their death, i dont really see what the big deal is.

or mabey i am just stupid :?

I honestly don''t think that C. delpfax and C. oiapoquensis will actually cross breed, they require somewhat differing conditions.
