Mexican Ictalurus

Post by Silurus »

Most people don't think that Ictalurus is found south of the border, but there are quite a few species endemic to Mexico and southwestern US. Many (all?) of these species are threatened by habitat loss and at least one (I. pricei, the Yaqui catfish) is protected by federal law in the US.

Here is the Lerma catfish (Ictalurus dugesii):

HH,
Hopefully I will get some live photos of these fish soon. Went down to Taxco last weekend and crossed over one of the very few promising rivers I have seen here to date. Hope to get back there in the next week or so.

Be careful not to end up with channel cats instead. Some of these species are almost indistinguishable from I. punctatus (which is also found in Mexico).

Unless I know it stays small it will probably just get photographed and put back.
