It was sold as a candy stripe pleco but looks like a clown pleco to me based on some pics in the cat-e log

Yup, definitely .

The candy strip pleco has a light grey/white base colour with black, fairly thick stripes. The P. Maccus is brown base with lighter, fairly thin stripes.

For the Panaque, you should have a bit of wood for it to chew on.
