how big is big for a pl*c?

OK, sid, I know it's 'dangerous', but you know I'm not the biggest catfishfreak in the Netherlands(because that's you ;)) and I thought they would be right with this one, but I'm not sure.

And I didn't insult you, I just wasn't sure you did, but there are spotless adonis in the cat-elog and I know another guy who bought a 12 cm adonis, whoch is now spotless, but you're right, I'm not sure. Maybe someone else is?

The first time i saw this pic, several years ago, the fish was ID's as A. hystrix.

I still want to know how, based on the information in the photo, we can tell it is adonis and not hystrix. Is it possible that what we have here is ONE species and not two? No one has brought up distinguishing characteristics desides teh disappering spots on adonis.

troi, whose adonis was about 2 1/2 inches and spotted when last seen.

Someone just needs to look up the original description and see why the fish was described as a distinct sp. The ref is "Isbrucker and Nijssen (1988) Acanthicus adonis, ein neuer Harnisch-wels aus dem Rio Tocantins, Brasilien. DATZ 41 (6) 164-167." I do not have the article on hand, just the ref.

What makes you think Jools or Shane or anyone knows anything more?
One thing I've discovered is that nobody knows much about these fish ....
One thing I do know is that you will know when you have a Adonis .... your Piranha's will be cowering under a log ...

With the original description in front of me and Babelfish, this is what I can make out:

Acanthicus adonis is distinguished from all other congeners (including A. hystrix) in having a juvenile coloration of white spots, a more pointed (vs. rounded) snout, and reduced odontodal growth on the snout margin and the preoperculars. The original description also alludes to additional color differences (pitch black for A. adonis and dark brown for all other Acanthicus).
