Sick L-260?

Post by König Löwe »

My queen arabesque has been acting a bit strange the last days, he is much less shy than he used to and lies out in the open instead of behind a piece of driftwood like he used to.

When I went to check on the tank today, I noticed that he had some white blotches on the left side of his body. I took some pictures which you can see on this link: http://akvariet.nu/diskusjon/messages/12321/21405.html

Any idea of what this could be? It sort of looks like he's scratched himself, but I'm not sure about this.

I dropped a few shrimp pellets and an algae chip (seen beneath the fish on pic 1) to see if he was eating. It seemes as if he guards the food without eating any himself. He just chases away the other fish who wants to eat. He sort of bounces around...

The picture is kind of blurred, but it looks like your fish has a Chilodonella infection. You should remove it from the tank immediately.
A salt bath is the simplest treatment method. Acriflavine should work as well.

How much salt should i use?

I have a 15 litre (4 us gallons) plastic container which i could put an heater and a small pump innto, would this be ok or will it stress the fish more than neccesary?

Is this contagious?

my UNTERGASSER book says:
short bath (10-45 minutes): 15-20 gramms per litre
long treatment (5 days): 1 g per 12.5 Litres (softwater under 8° gh) and 3 g/litre hardwaterfish (>12°gh)

good luck
cheers

I'm not sure if i understood that last thing about a long treatment... 1gram per 12.5 litre, is this for fish that live in soft water? The GH of the water in all my tanks is below 6.

Yup, 1 g per 12.5 liters for soft-water fish, 3 g per 10 liters for hard-water fish.

Thought is should update you (and later readers of this thread) on the condition of the L-260. I added 3 grams of salt, in my case, half a teaspoon, to my 37.5 litre qurantine tank, and i allso did a 25% water change. On the 4th of March, he was moved innto this tank and all the previous inhabitants where transfered to other tanks. I couldnt get the filter (smallest Eheim internal, 150 l/h) running, so i was worried about him suffocating. I could not do anything about this and on the 6th, I went away for an vacation and i got back yesterday.

He was still alive, but his colours where very dark, so i suspect he was not very happy about his situation. So, today I bought a powerhead with a power of apx 650 l/h. I put this innto my 85 litre tank and made some changes and moved the L-260 innto the tank and he is alone in there, the other fish has been moved.

Anyways, the salt seems to have done what it should, the childonela (or whatever it was) seems to be gone, so I'm hoping that he will recover fast from his disease.
