Shane attempts to earn a Darwin Award in Nicaragua

Just came back from Managua yesterday. Went to the top of Masaya volcano outside Managua and took some shots. It is also known as "Boca del Infierno" or The Mouth of Hell. The Spanish insisted that the Indians build a big cross at the volcano's lip to keep the devil at bay.

Coming up on the crater... The smoke stinks like sulpher and makes you cough a lot.

I showed these photos to my wife when I got home and her only response was, "You are lucky you did not earn a Darwin Award."

Perfectly safe ;)

I went to Iceland last summer and did some of the same things, only on volcanoes a bit more active that average. Dont mind the sulfur fumes, you get used to those!

We "skied" down Hekla (another mouth of hell!) by jumping in the pummice, although we never reached the top to look in. We did straddle a volcano though! The ground is actually still hot in krafla, dont put your film or hand down without paying attention! Its also a rift, that runs quite away, so you can straddle it and look down at the steam coming from between your legs :o

But your volcanoes seem more explosive! So you win a prize there....

Last time I climbed Mt Baker... all I could smell for the last hour was sulfur. Kind of reminded me of being in the car with Linder after having his famous corned beef and hash after a night of guinness.

In the same sad sense of humour... One of the Secret Service Agents that was down here with former President Clinton a couple weeks ago told me that after showing his badge and gun permit to TSA officials (the folks that run security at U.S. airports) they gave him some gruff. Yes, his credentials and weapons permit were fine and he could take his 9 mm pistol on the flight, however, he was told he could not board until he gave them his cigarette lighter!

That's dripping irony, allright.

like he's going to use the lighter to mess up the plane, but completely forgets he''s packing as soon as the plane gets airborne :roll:

You met Clinton too? or only the agent?
I kinda have a soft spot for the Big Dog; IMO he was a very good president, although he should have been a wee bit more careful on the girls. :wink:

I was with Clinton for three days during the visit, but truthfully I spent most of my time interacting with his advance team, staff, and Secret Service detail. Tell you all about it over a beer sometime.
