Venting Fresh Imports..

Post by SteveL91 »

Hi,

A store near me recently (they say within the past week or so) got in a pair of 6-8" (15-~20cm or so) L-47. According to Larry Vires' book, venting is most reliable on sexually mature fish in spawning condition. I highly doubt this pair is in anything even remotely close to spawning condition, but they looked good. I was able to get a look at both undersides, and both fish appeared to be male: the genitalia were both the same size and shape (fairly slender and elongated), and one of the fish had fairly heavy odontode growth. The point: does anyone know if freshly imported fish can be accurately vented? I'd like to work with this species, and I've never seen them this size. I don't have a problem picking up one and growing out a group of smaller fish, but if I can find a few females that are already spawning size, I'd likely go that route.

Thanks in advance,
Steve
