I love the Google Earth feature showing where our cats come from.

I was looking at the Zebra plecs home range and I'm unsure of what I'm looking at. It appears to be several large outcrops of fractured bedrock forming an almost spider web of small creeks. Having never been there personally I'm wordering if my perception is correct. And just how large are those outcrops?

The original description mentions an "anastomosus" which I had to look up in the dictionary, this is a great word which means precisely what you describe in terms of the haphazard arrangement of islands and channels.

Someone else can fill you in on the details of size, but zoom in with google and switch on the scale.

Also, if you really like the feature, feel free to send me a few locations of your own for species that do not have this set-up yet.

I used the line measure feature to get some scale. The anastomosus (you're right, great word) where the marker is located is a little over 5 miles long. The distance upriver to the fork, containing 2 or 3 anastomosi (

) is about 15 miles.

Any idea where the proposed dam is being built?

I should point out that if thats one of my DMZ files I have approimated the locations as best I can. (Never having been to the Rio Xingu or Brasil for that matter) From information in Aqualog (2nd ed) and the planet cat fish site. I have also tried to spread them out a little so they don't all overlap. Any of the ones I have sent in should be viewed as indications of the general area rather than exact locations. If anyone with more experiance / knowledge can improve the locations I'd be very happy to update them.

what version of google earth you use? I was trying to do some research for h. zebra and other cats but I cannot (i got free version :P).

I use the free version of Earth. Works fine. You do have to DL it. See the link in the Zebra listing.

If memort serves, the precise type location for H. zebra is in the description. I will try and remember and check it when I get home.

Now that's interesting. I checked the Zebras location in the Cat-elog. "One hour upstream of Altamira by speedboat" is a close quote. So I flew to "Altamira, Brazil". It seems to be about 1,100 miles from the marker for the Zebras, in the far NW section of Brazil. Fast boats down there!

Jools, I'm thinking the problem is with Earth, not the KMZ. Altamira does seem to be about 30 miles away from the marker. But entering "Altamira, Brazil" took me to the far NW. Perhaps I should have included the State in the search field. I'll give it a shot and repost.

OK. If I enter "Altamira, Brazil" I go to the far NW and right on top of a very interesting looking river. But when I enter "Altamira Brazil" (drop the comma) I go right to the city, about 30 miles from the reported Zebra location. So I think the KMZ is correct. Adding "Para" in the search produced no results. (Location not found)

Was speaking to a friend yesterday for the first time in a few months. He called me from a new summer home he bought in New Jersey, right on the Delaware Bay. I found his new place on Earth while we were talking. He was very impressed. In fact he told to hang on a second. I could here him moving around and opening the door. He said "OK, I'm in the front yard. Can you see me?"!!! I'm still laughing! Had to explain it to him.
