Bulldog Pleco

Post by Taratron »

How big do these guys get?

I have one in a 20 gallon tank right now, and have a 20 Long as well. But I don't want to stunt my fish, so I'll take him to an lfs before I stunt him....if I haven't already! Have had him since last fall....around two and a half inches now.

20 Gallon has: 1 golden wonder killifish, 1 dwarf puffer, 4 cories, 3 ghost shrimp, 1 amano shrimp.

20 Long has: 4 danios, 2 mollies, 2 otos, 1 amano shrimp, 1 ghost shrimp
But if you tame me, then we shall need each other. To me, you will be unique in all the world. To you, I will be unique in all the world..... You become responsible, forever, for what you have tamed.

Hi!
I think one grows to about 8 inches if I am correct, being pictured in the Aqualog supplement, look really huge!
Cheers

I don't think they get that big Yann, mine all seem to have stopped growing at about 4", one of them is 4.5.

The largest species I am aware of is Chaetostoma milesi. I have caught indiduals that were seven inches total length. I would say that 3.5-4.5 inches total length is average for the genus.

Which tank would he be better in?

Whichever tank is the cooler of the two. Although puffers are notorious fin-nippers and aren't really suitable for the community tank.

Neither. I would do the following.

20 gallon: Make it a slightly brackish tank. Add the puffer, ghost shrimps, and two mollies. You will still have lots of room for more mollies, guppys, and swordtails.

20 long: fast water tank. Add a powerhead and use the danios, otos, and amano shrimp. You can also have your Chaetostoma with room to spare.

The Golden wonder killie is an Indian killie that will reach 5 inches in length. A pretty fish, but either pass it on or buy a larger tank.
