Fist plecos, now butterflies - what is it that attracts the local wildlife to your pants?! :D

Nice variety of shots, did you catch any other Brochis along with the one pictured?

What is the fish in this pic, it looks like a baby arrowana or arapaima?

Hi!

None of these 2, looks like a Characoid fish.
Something that the brasilian would call "Peixe Cachoro"

Cheers

Yeah, it is a sabre tooth characin of some description. See http://www.opefe.com/hydrolycus.html - they butterflys are attacted to, I think, salts in the material in this case washing powder.

Awfully large mouth on such a small fish! I'm trying to think why a mouth and teeth would become so disproportionally large, aside from being a carnivore and a predator? The article mentioned that they're awkward swimmers.

The color of the Brochis is so much brighter, just out of the river.

I saw nothing awkward about that swimming! It's just different, but very purposeful. Head down, prowling for food. Made quick work of those feeders. Never knew what hit them. Took a few viewings to see the feeders, since there was no fight to get them. I wouldn't want to be in their sights. :egrin:

Any chance of a list of species you caught soon? Looks like you had a grat trip!

Possibly a bit off-topic, but this link proves that vast unexplored areas of tropical rainforests are still found, and new species of fish could still be expected:

Fish ID

Post by BrentStl »

I'm curious if you were able to ID the fish from Day 1 in picture "dr3 003," "dr3 004," and "dr3 006." I know characins are't the game here, but it looks like an all-silver version of bario steindachneri. While he's listed here as markiana nigripinnis, I'm fairly sure that picture is actually bario steindachneri (the "blotch-tail bario").

http://www.fishbase.org/Photos/Pictures ... at=species

It really piqued my interest because I was lucky enough to stumble on a group of m. nigripinnis over the summer... then spent forever trying to figure out what I brought home.

Actually, I think it might be! Try as we might, we couldn't encourage it to take up the smoking habit. Seriously for a moment, this pleco was pulled up from under the house we were on just becuase we said we liked plecos, we took our shots and then it was returned to the water.

Crenicichla cincta is my best guess. Any other ideas? It is a very young fish, so it's hard to tell.

Could someone please post here a link to photos from first day? Or pm it to me? :).

NICE! What that picture needs however is a big cigarette hanging out of the plecos "mouth" (or head).
