Corys in deep tanks

Post by taybelZ »

hiya, I'm kinda newish to the world of cories.

I currently am housing 10 sterbais in a 4x2x2, i was told my a guy that cories aren't too fond of deep tanks (anything over 18inch). As they are found in the shallow waters in the wild...

Is this true?

Thanks
David

This is probably a common myth. Young fry don't live well in deep water (over 4-6"), but adults should be fine. I have my C. sterbai in a tank where there's more than 20" of water, so I think you should be fine.

hi mat, thanks for the quick reply.

What would you consider young fry? Mine are proably 3 months old, and i would guess 3.5cms (head to tail)

By fry, I mean really tiny fish - less than 2cm for sure.

Mine were probably around 4cm when I put them in the big tank - but 3.5 should be fine.

And I think 3months old cory's are smaller than 3.5cm, by the way... But I've never bred them, so I don't know for sure... Mine are over 6 months since I got them, and they have grown from around 4 to around 5 cm in that time - and there's certainly more growing before they are fully grown, but the females I've got are certainly showing that they are a bit gravid...

I keep some of my cories in a 400l tank which is 5x2x2 and have had no problems, there are even some pygmaeus, habrosus and hastatus and they have no problems getting to the surface for a gulp if they choose.

Ther is a photo here if you want to look
