Cory with bad/tattered condition

Post by taybelZ »

I use to have a baby clown knive with my cories and it attacked one of my cories all the time at night. I end up selling the clown (was 10cms or so), and am left with a cory sterbai who has a ripped top fin and white fungus on his head region. Initially i thought it would slowly heal back up with good water conditions and a UV on. A few months down the track and the condition of the fish seems the same (but the white cloud stuff seems to have pass onto another cory sterbai)

What can i do to treat? The tank is a 4x2x2 @ 80degrees
I do have a hospital tank, so can properly medicate in there...

Please advise.

Hi

This 'fungal infection' that you speak of, sounds more like a bacterium infection, I can't remember the name of it (hopefully some one else can) but there is disease that gives the appearance of looking just like fungus, especially when attached to damaged fins. This can be difficult to treat and having looked cured, an outbreak can reoccur. Try treating for two weeks with Melafix, But; remember to increase the amount of oxygen in your tank, as Melafix has a tendency to reduce the amount of dissolved oxygen in the water.

I've found Melafix and time to be a good healer as well. I had special ordered some dianemas from a local shop and received two of them badly battered. Missing barbels, chunks missing from fins (looked like bite marks), and completely colorless due to stress. Two weeks with Melafix and you could see signs of healing. Two months later and you can't tell the two battered ones from the two that weren't. If you don't see any improvement with Melafix, I have used Maracyn before as well. It works much quicker and doesn't seem to affect biological filters. Depends on whether or not you want to try a natural product or an antibiotic.
