My cory has a problem! Help!

Post by chrisinha »

I woke up this morning to find out one of my albino cories has one of her pectoral fins red/swollen at the base of the fin. I've had her for almost 2 years, so she's a pet!

She was acting normally, but was swimming from one side to the other in the tank, so that's why it caught my attention, I thought she was spawning again, but then I saw that she wasn't moving this particular fin and had a tendency to tilt a little to the opposite side of her body when she was still.

I put her in a quarantine tank with 2 other cories that I've got yesterday, since I don't have any other tank that I can put her in :( I've added melafix/pimafix, but am wondering if I should use a stronger medication like Jungle Labs Fungus or Parasite Clear or any other.

I've heard that it's not safe to use salt with cories. I'm sorry but I'm at loss here. I don't want to lose my cory! What can this be? Is it just an injury or could it be something more serious like parasite or septicemia???

I'm somewhat concerned too because I fed them live bloodworms 2 days ago (I never feed them live worms!) and yesterday I found that one of my female guppies had red streaks all over her body and had to move her to the hospital tank (that's why I had to put the cory in the Q-tine tank with the new cories)

Please help!!

How often are you making water changes? and what are the main tanks water parameters.

25% water change is done once a week. It was due (and done) yesterday. Ammonia 0, Nitrites 0, Ph was too low at 6.4, but after water change it went up to 6.8 (my tap water pH is 7.6)

I've got some pics. Hopefully you'll be able to see the red spot on the base of her fin, they pics are kinda out of focus because the lighting in the q-tank doesnt help. If you want I can manage to get her out of the tank and get more pics. Just let me know

Thanks for helping Coryman

Any ideas, please?

I'd like to start her on a stronger med if that's the case, but I dont want to stress the fish for nothing... :(

What should I do?

I don't see that much of a problem from looking at the pictures. I would just treat with a standard recommended dose of melafix. Being an albino I would expect to see the occasional blood spot or inflammation.

Thank you Coryman :)

She looks much better today. The spot is not so red anymore, not so swollen and she can move the fin a little bit better. Besides Melafix and Pimafix, I also did a one time swab of Wound Control. Topic treatment. It helped my goldfish in the past, so I thought it was worth a shot and it looks like it helped.
