Petricolas in the wild

Does anyone have any information on how petricolas breed in the wild? What are we trying to replicate with the cave/bowl and marbles set-up? With the eggs and fry being so delicate and the fact that petricolas will eat their eggs and fry, I wonder what the conditions are like in the wild that allow the eggs and fry to survive?

Most fish eggs/fry in the wild never make it to maturity, :P only the lucky few survive to reproduce.
