Clicking cat-eLog selections gives "error" message

Post by Deb »

Just as I've finally figured out the way to find a catfish I only know by genus name, I am met with an error!

1.When you click Genus Thumbnails an error 404 message is returned. BTW, what is the best way to search for a catfish when you don't know, and can't guess, the family?

2.Here is the message you get for clicking Last 20 Species :

Last 20 Cat-eLog pages visited

Warning: mysql_fetch_array(): supplied argument is not a valid MySQL result resource in /home/.heathcote/webcat/planetcatfish.com/catelog/last20.php on line 14

Warning: mysql_free_result(): supplied argument is not a valid MySQL result resource in /home/.heathcote/webcat/planetcatfish.com/catelog/last20.php on line 23
All dates and times are that of the server (and it thinks it is 2006-07-04 04:31:53).

Deborah (no, I'm not part of the message; I'm part of the solution - I think!)

Hi Deb,
If you have a scientific name use the search button in the upper toolbar.
If you have a common name use the all common names button; it sits under Cat-elog (upper toolbar as well).
If you have no name and no clue at all, describe the fish in the What's my Catfish forum (or just PM me )

Thanks, Marc. I'll go that route for now. A search gives you a list of sites to browse. It's a roundabout way of doing it, but it works. Ideally, I'd like to be able to do a quick search on genus name, only. Either that, or I'll have to memorize all the members of all the families!

Also, if you actually want the Genus page, you can get to it by clicking on the Cat-eLog menu itself, and then selecting the Genus list from that - it's obviously a case of the menu-list and the link from the "Cat-eLog home-page" is not automatically updated from a common source...

I'm not sure what you mean. What Genus list? If you click Genus Thumbnails on the drop down cat-eLog menu, the Error 404 message is returned.

If you click on the Genus thumbnails line in the cat-eLog "home page" you get a list all right - but it is ordered by family.

So ... what do you mean?

In my understanding of things, there's only one "Genus thumbnail" list - there's two ways to get to it, but you get the same thing: You can select the Genus Thumbnails in the Clog Menu, or you can got to the Clog Homepage and follow the link there - you still get the same Genus by family list. However, at the moment, the genus thumbnail list as a menuitem is broken, because it links to the wrong file...

Can you explain what is different between my thoughts of what you should expect, and what you expected to get?

Mats, I thought we were having two different experiences of the Genus Thumbnail function. I didn't understand this post:

I understand this post better:

It's pretty clear that the Error 404 message reflects a linking problem. I'm not surprised; that would be the logical thing to expect. Thinking it over, a long alphabetical list of all the genus names would be as cumbersome as searching by typing the name into the Search function. What about an alphabetical genus list, without regard to family, and hang one of those alphabet bars over it?

Well, I knew what I meant... ;-)

As you probably understand, I was just referring to an alternative way to get to the same place.

Finding the right way to present the data for this is quite interesting.

If you know the genus, you probably know the family too (at least I know the family of most genera that I know), so the sorting by family is OK by me. You can always use "Ctrl-F" to do a search within the page, if you want to...

Maybe, but it's not a priority. Post again with this enhancement suggestion in a few months when the V2 dust has settled a bit. In the meantime I'm going to "close" this bug report.
