Safe Meds for Syno Petricola

Post by DJRansome »

I have a tank of Malawi Cichlids in with my Petricola. I need to treat an outbreak of bloat. Questions:
1-Can the Syno's be infected?
2-Can the Syno's tolerate Clout?
3-Can the Syno's tolerate Metronidazole?

The Synos will tolerate metronidazole. Definitely the best method of dealing with bloat for the fish is to feed a high veggie/fiber, low protein diet in the future. I hear quite often from people that tell me they've always fed a certain type of food to their mbuna until suddenly one day they bloat most of the fish in the tank. They can tolerate more protien when they are growing, but as they age, the stress factors play a big part in what they can digest without causing problems. They basically have long digestive tracts like horses. They need lots of roughage on a constant basis with no sudden changes. No "treats" and what not.

On a positive note, Syno. petricola will thrive on that diet. They love their veggies and will actually eat black brush algae if you decide to plant their tank. Granted, they aren't quite as good at it as SAE's, but they really make the effort. Good luck with your fish!

Thanks!

I feed the Malawi's and the Petricola Aquadine spirulina flake. The theory from the cichlid forum is that I re-arranged the rockwork causing territory wars and stress.
