Cleaning My M. Electricus tank

umm im cleaning my elctric cat tank. shes about 6 inches long now and i dont want to be shocked. any suggestions. i have a plastic handled net and insulated gloves.
do i need to stand on anything

You dont need to stand on anything else then your own feet's

Just move her with a net to a bucket under the time you clean the tank.

He/she won't shock you unless you brush up against it, and even then, it's just a little jolt, nothing to be anxious about. In fact, instead of spending money on coffee, you could just pat your M electricus on the head every morning and donate the saved $$ to wildlife conservation.

Hmm, that might be fine now while the cat is only 6" but its not a good habbit to get into, my 17" M.microstoma packs enough of a punch to knock me onto my backside, as i found when i got zapped while trying to fix the filter back to the side of the tank (i'm sure it sets traps for me).

The best course of action is just keep your hands out of the tank as much as possible, i use a long length of 10mm plastic piping pushed into a length of 12mm filter hose as a syphon so i can reach the substrate and into any nooks and crannies without ever touching the water, the cat attacks the tube but i remain shock free. In the event you need to do major maintainance remove the cat from the tank and keep it in a bucket or large container for a short while.

Don't be afraid to put your hand in the water. For most of us we've experienced a broken heater submerged light or serged filter and it's nothing to cry about... and funny as all getout to watch.
