Where to list "free to good home" cats?

Post by Mori »

Hi. I'm looking for advice on how to find a home for some beloved "plecos". I love these guys but I'm going to be moving house a couple thousand miles and I can't bring them (I'll be a few months without a tank).

They aren't special in any way. I thought they were Liposarcus pardalis, but they're bigger than the cat-elog lists. I'm afraid they may be too big and too common to find homes for but thought I'd ask y'all if you had any ideas. Would the Watermart auction be appropriate?

I'd appreciate any advice. Thanks! (And oh yeah, anyone want my plecos? :) )

I think this place or the Loricariidae section of the forum is fine.

If you actually have L. pardalis that are bigger than the what's listed in the Cat-eLog, can you take a (good) picture of the fish next to a tape-measure/ruler to show it's real size, and we'll update the measurement based your fish [assuming we don't say "No, that's not L. Pardalis, it's xxxx"]. Bear in mind that the measurement given in the Cat-eLog is "Standard length", which is the length from nose to the beginning of the caudal (tail) fin [or put another way, to the end of the actual body, before the fin starts]. This is commonly used by scientists (because fins are easily damaged).

For identification purposes an additional photo showing the belly (ventral) side of the fish might also come in handy.

Thank you both for the information. With proper measuring, it does look like my fish are close to the typical size range for L. pardalis. I'll try to get some pictures to verify their identities. Pictures are easy...good pictures are giving me some trouble. :D

I should be able to get some good ventral shots though--I guess that's the easy part of photographing sucker mouth catfish.

Yeah, for every photo I put on my site, I probably take 10-20 "bad" ones.

And it's easy to get a ventral shot until you actually NEED one of that particular fish - that's when they decide to not suck to the glass for quite some time...

You also wouldn't be the first (or the last) to overestimate the size of the fish - or not realize the difference between total length (TL) and standard length (SL) when looking... Fish always look bigger in the tank than when they are next to a tape-measure... ;-)

Well, I've been trying to get decent photos without much luck. Not even bellyshots. You're right--they don't feel like sticking to the glass when you want them to! Anyway, my photography is getting better and eventually maybe I'll get a good picture.

(I should have known to not include the tail in the measurement--I wouldn't think to include it when measuring any other fish. Even so, funny how I didn't realize just how long those tails are!)
