Syno spikes

Saw something interesting at lfs. In a large tank was a big old Syno. It was 14-15" and a rather nondescript gray color (probably from that West African complex). Here's what was interesting- on both sides of the body just above the pectorals was a 2" square patch of spikes/thorns. I've had Synos for 20+ years and have never seen this. My assumption is this is a male and he uses these for fighting/defense. If anyone has input please reply.

What you saw was most likely the bony bumps on the surface of the cleithral (humeral) process.

I'm still not sure that's what it was. There were about 8 on each side and they each came to a point. Your knowledge on this is much greater than mine so I'll have to concede you're right.

What you saw were most likely the spikes/bumps on the surface of <i>S. acanthomias</i>. This species has an unusual humeral process where the posterior part is covered with a series of spikes.

I have Poll's Syno book. The line drawing of acanthomias fits what I saw. Thanks for your input.
