Chaetostoma ID

Post by Griparn »

Which Chaetostoma species does this fish belong to. It's around 6-7 cm. It was labelled as Chaetostoma Thomsoni, but this LFS has had wrong names before.

It is actually a Colombian sp. from the Magdalena basin or Orinoco basin up above Villavicencio. Try a small search on Chaetostoma as this fish has been discussed at length in some recent threads. They are extra (even for their genus) sensitive to warmer water. I had a recent temperature spike up to 83F for two days and it killed the four I had while the C. thomsoni in the same tank did fine.

Thanks for your knowledge. I didnt know they were so super sensitive for temp. changes. I'll keep that in mind.

By looking at photos at this page I think C. sp(2) are very close.

Hi Shane, how can you be shure - just by looking at the picture? If you take the pictures before and after it, they seem to me to be more in the nudirostre-direction... :)

Klaus,
I can be sure as I have collected both spp. in the wild. C. nudirostre is found in just a handful of quebradas (streams) in Carabobo State, Venezuela. Since there is no commercial collection of tropical fishes in this area, there is no chance of C. nudirostre just showing up at a local pet store.

Shane,
I was asking you, because I bought a couple of C. nudirostris from Ingo Seidel last year. :) These were not a private catch, they were officially traded at his store.

Ingo was collecting in that area a few years ago and staying with Norbert Flauger, who has a tourism posada (inn) near Bejuma in Carabobo. I know Norbert brings fish to Germany from time to time. So either Ingo brought them back or Norbert brings him fishes when he visits Germany.

Shane,
I went to the link below your signature. What a wealth of information. It lists the Chaestoma as having 43 valid species and 15 known/estimated new species. It sounds as if there's much to be sorted out. I think it would be safe to refer to the creature in the 75 gallon tank next to me as a Chaestoma sp. until things are straighted out. He's one heck of a fish! :D

There are 43 described spp. but the 15 undescribed is VERY conservative. I would estimate there could be 40-60 undescribed spp. Very few of the Pacific and Caribbean drainages have been explored and are sure to reveal many new spp.
