syno petricola sick

Post by rfb »

My syno petricola is sick and it is baffling me.He was in a tank so that he would get bigger I noticed one day that he was acting very strangely,up against the glass and listlesly staying in the same spot.Since he is a very lively fish when I did see him I thought this strange and as soon as was possible I did a check on the amonia and nitrites and nitrates, all were high so I moved him from that tank into a seperate tank and into a breeding floater.Since that time he has progressivly had a problem that started on his tail and the area was a very pale pink it is now to his anal fin and and he has no tail.He still is moving and seems interested in some things, for some reason I decided to go with pimafix as it seemed to me more of a bacteria thing, this has slowed the movement and I used 2 tablets of mericyn 2 in quarters and he seems somewhat better.I have two things to ask;am I being cruel with this and should I try melafix instead.he is one of my favorites and I would hate to lose him either way but dont like anything to suffer.

I would personally swab the affected area with iodine and do daily water changes on the tank. You'll probably end up needing to treat with Kanacyn or some other broad spectrum antibiotic, but definitely only do that in a quarantine tank where you can do 50% water changes daily for him, also. They are terribly tough, you should be able to save him, I'd think.
