planted tank ... possible with Plecos?

Post by shuhu »

I'm still waiting for 2 Clown Plecos from the LFS, and maybe a Butterfly Pleco, but I don't know if they will mess with my plants ???

I'm planning to have a widely planted tank, mostly with riccia, java moss, dwarf grass and will probably add some other type of background (tall) plants. I currently have a little bunch of Anacharis. I also have a piece of driftwood, and I'm considering if I should or shouldn't let some moss grow over it (because of the plecos)

Does anyone here has had any bad experiences with Plecos destroying your planted tank???? Or could you guys maybe recommend some plants that they won't like to eat???

If the pleco's we're talking about are Clown pleco's, , then I can certainly say that they do not harming any plants.

I've never kept any Dekeyseria specie, so I don't know their behaviour towards plants.

In all, there's actually not that many plecos (if any) that are known to eat plants, but the bigger varieties tend to "bulldoze" things that get in their way. Smaller plecos don't seem to do this as much or at all, so from that perspectiv both of the ones you talk about are fine.

I've got a planted tank with the following species:

None of these are causing any noticable harm to my plants. This, however, can't be said about the rosy barbs that also cohabit with the above plecos...

That would be my thought too, but since I haven't kept them, I wanted to hedge my bets, as it's easy to draw too many conclusions from just looking at things. But I would say that it's 90% sure that they will not cause any problem with plants.

According to the description of , it doesn't harm plants in general.
