Catfish ID

Post by ChristianHansen »

Hello
I have this catfish, and I am a little uncertain about its ID. I think it is a Synodontis Notatus without spots, but can any of you confirm this ?

The pictures of it can be viewed at :

http://www.akvariesiden.dk/forum_ny/for ... &id=174095

The site is danish, so most of you proberly wont understand a word, but the pictures of the first two entries in the post show the catfish,[/url]

That's not a Synodontis, but a Chrysichthys. Probably .

The first two links in the thread show a South American Redtailed Catfish.

Thanks for putting the photos here ;-)

The Chrysichthys Auratus dosent really look like it. I have had it from when it was only a few centimeters, and now it is approximately 18cm. I do aggree that it looks a lot like the Chrysichthys species, but hmmm.....

The physique made me think Ariidae straight away. I think it seems quite far from the typical Claroteidae, but must admit that some of the Chrysichthys spp.'s seem not so far off ;)

Definitely chrysichthys.

but it could be another species, some of those Chrysichthys look a lot the same, esp when juvies. (and some get huge! making 18 cm pretty 'juvie')

I've seen auratus on occasion, and those are more "metallic", and the eyes are even bigger.

it looks like C brachynema to me.

btw the first pic of C brachynema in the catelog is another species, the rest (10 pics) show C brachynema, but that first looks like a species more close to auratus again.
