Leiarius pictus tankmate sugestions and setup

Post by jd_7655 »

I'm thinking of picking one of these up and was wondering if anyone could offer some advice. The fish will be housed in a 72x24 tank. would a large pleco be a good tank mate along with a large pike cichlid?

I think in the long term a Leiarius pictus will outgrow that tank. A better choice would be a shoal of Sorubim lima or Pimelodus ornatus.

These will be perfect for this tank, and large plecs, Characins and Crenicichla will be good tank mates.

Make sure the pikes can't breed (one is probably best), as they could cause trouble.

This choice of fish will be less destructive, so you can aquascape the tank with bogwood roots and java fern etc to make it look really good.

The pictus will out grow the 72x24tank in a short while. I know it is tempting to purchase a small "cute" pictus but once it easily reaches over 20 inches in length you will have a hard time finding a new home for it.
