I seriously doubt that the Nitrates are actually zero - if your test shows this, then it's probably out of date.

Unless you change LOTS of water every day and don't have much in the way of fish in the tank...

There's LOTS of things that you could have in that tank... What it should be is entirely up to you... Small plecos of various kinds are OK in that size tank, for example, but just one example...

I can't remember what fish you do have in the tank, some Danios, right?

google says this on "Siamese flying fox"
Crossocheilus siamensis (Smith, 1931)

This slender algae eating barb is the only known fish that eats red algae.

lol, i dont wanna change my name, i still like them, even if i cant keep them!!

Ive had Angelfish for about a month, dont ask why, and dont tell me to take them back, because ive already planned to do so
so, basically, i want a fish that will live comfortably with 1 Siamese Flying Fox ( its just a normal Flying Fox, but it also eats Red Algae, and it doesnt have the Yellow Stripe) 3 Leapord Danios(which will probably die soon, 2 years old!!) and a bristlenose

Ill probably get 10 Neons, because everyone in my family that uses the computer next to my tank loves the little buggers.

im not sure i want more plecs than the Bristlenose!! so do you think i should just stick with

1 S.F.F.
1 BN
10 Neons
3 Danios

Crossocheilus siamensis, the Siamese Flying Fox.

It's a cyprinid in the sub-family Garrinae.

I seriously doubt that the Nitrates are actually zero - if your test shows this, then it's probably out of date.

This has just happened to me recently. My test kit was giving me a near zero reading too. After a chat in the LFS saying how low in nitrates my tapwater was, and how high they were at the LFS down the road, I realised that my test has always been defective!

The true nitrate reading of my tank came as a bit of a shock

As for your tank, buy a few books, go to some shops, decide what you like, and if you're unsure, then someone here is bound to know the answer!

i think im going to go out and buy a different test set, mine has been damaged quite a bit after being knocked around, and mashed up, leaked, and all that jazz

is that fish list(previous post) really under-stocked? is there space for another 1 or pair of fish? if so, what?
bearing in mind, i dont want to faff around with PH, so mine is 7

Don't be surprised if the Danios hang around for a while. My brother gave me my first fish: (2) Platies and (4) Zebra Danios. He gave me the fish around 3 years ago now, after he had the fish for at least 2-3 years. They were adults when he got them. The only survivor, and he's barely clinging to life at the moment, is one of the male Zebra Danios. He's at least 5, more like 6 years old, maybe even older. The Platies and (3) of the other Danios died within the past 6 months. I checked on him this morning because he was sitting on the bottom of the tank. He must've needed a rest because he started to boss the other 2 newer Danios around and try to breed with them as soon as he saw my hand. I can't tell you how many times I've written off that one Danio!

Pictus Man, half a dozen or so Corydoras would fill the empty space in your tank! :)

Yes, a few Cory's would make a nice addition to the list of fish you've got. It would be similar to my wife's tank, which is the same as yours [I think - it's a Juwel 60], it's got a few bristlenoses babies, a few Marbled mollies, and 5 or 6 Neons [had 7 to start with, but at least one has died], 4 siamese fighters [1m/3f], and a pair of Rams. It's probably a bit too much for this tank size, but everyone seems to be happy and I do fairly large water changes each week to keep the tank at low levels of nitrate. I did have my 6 in there too, but they moved to my big tank several weeks back [before the Ram's went in there].

Yes, I agree. Convert your old tank into a novelty bookcase, and buy that BIG tank you've always wanted!

What Brand are those dud test kits? I use Nutrafin and Sera.

Go for a couple of varieties of Cory's, rather than all of the same. Some that contrast nicely.

Mats, I would love to hear your thoughts on keeping Rams (alive!), at some stage. (Even at Aquatic Babble, if not appropriate on a Catfish site).

I've heard (and read) several places about them being difficult to keep [after I got mine] - I don't know what I'm doing right or wrong, but mine seem to be doing just fine with my normal regime of weekly (+/- 30%) water changes in a 60 x 30 x 30 cm tank. * TOUCH WOOD *. The label on the tank said that they were bred in Belgium and noted that this breed is stronger than the asian bred variety - how much of that is marketing speak and how much is truth is a good question. They did spawn on the 4th day after I got them, but there was no fry from that spawn [eggs got eaten after the parents deserted them, from what I could tell]. Haven't had another spawn...

but, i dont have much bottom space, thats why i didnt suggest corys.
i have one big piece in the middle, which the Flying Fox has taken over now, and one piece at the back, for my loaches to hide behind, so there really isnt much space left for active fish(...pictus)
but, seeing as my family all watch the tank, and it seems they all hate ALL catfish, i dont think theyre a good colour
they say "they dont do anything!!"
or " look, they dont do anything and they dont even have a nice colour, so you should get some neons"

I want to buy some, and let my family watch them get eaten
and then get rid of the preditory fish, and buy some more 8) 8)

so, anyone else got more ideas for fish?

Thanks Mats. I'd heard the same, but thought I was doing ok when my Rams spawned within a week. I had two later spawns, had some hatchings, but lost all Fry (due to my inexperiance with them). My adults went belly up about 3 monthes later. In total I bought and lost 7 Rams, before deciding maybe they weren't for me. From what I was led to believe, our Rams are bred locally (Melbourne). I think they're a fantatsic little fish.
