400l conditioning and growing tank

Post by eupterus »

I have been facinated with cories for years and am now in the situation where i acn seriously start keeping and breeding. I have a banks of 8 tanks 4x 120l 1 100l and 3 40l breeding tanks. I also have 2 400l tanks in my kitchen which currently have large amounts of Malawi cichlids. I am thinking of striping one of the 400l with the idea of growing up and conditioning my cories and broadening my range of species. I am aware of the inch rule and the surface area debateds with regards to numbers but wanting some opinions in numbers and species mix. I like to keep all my cories in groups of 6 -8 except my dwarfs which are all in dozens. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

sorry, this maybe relevant to your answers, I religeously do a 20% water change every two days and the tank is filtered with the standard Rio400 filter in addition to a fluval 4 and a eheim 2026 external.

I also have a rio400 and im of no help unfortunately...just amazed that you have 2. Do you use any special equipment for water changes? Because that's an awful lot of work! I didnt find the rio 400 filter useful and use 2 x 404s instead..they work a charm.

I do the tanks on alternate days and have two 20 gallon buckets for conditioning the water. As long as you are in the routine it is fine. I agree that the filter alone is insufficient. I think the Jewl tanks are best suited for planted tanks with little fish is small numbers. I on the other hand have many big nasty malawi cichlids and synos. Two Rio 400 end on end look great though
