Looks good, but surely it's not supposed to say
Warning: mysql_fetch_array(): 31 is not a valid MySQL result resource in /home/.heathcote/webcat/planetcatfish.com/c2/family.php on line 53
when you hit the Loricariidae family to see it's species????

Wow, that's quick! It's not meant to say that, that's precisely where I'm working at the moment. I'll post again when that bit works.

It's now fixed, I've got different versions of PHP locally and on the web, one is more relaxed about certain things than the other.

Also, this release sees alpha versions of the species and images pages.

I have the same problem as Mats (had?), but with all families.

It's now saying:
Warning: mysql_fetch_array(): supplied argument is not a valid MySQL result resource in /home/.heathcote/webcat/planetcatfish.com/c2/family.php on line 61
Doesn't seem fixed to me ;-)

Doh! I fixed it and then broke it again, it should now be fixed but if you don't see a full species name, you need to visit the catelog v1 to update the data into v2 for that species.

Yupp, that works.

I also took a look into the Loricariidae section - and the only one with a species name was the Hypancistrus sp(L333) - which looked good. Nitpick: It actually then came up with "hypancistrus" (lower-case all through)...

Is it correct that I'm not really supposed to see many of the species implemented yet, or is that a real bug?

Cat-eLog v1 has these on the family index pages

Warning: mysql_fetch_array(): supplied argument is not a valid MySQL result resource in /home/.heathcote/webcat/planetcatfish.com/catelog/loricari/INDEX.PHP on line 94

Warning: mysql_fetch_array(): supplied argument is not a valid MySQL result resource in /home/.heathcote/webcat/planetcatfish.com/catelog/loricari/INDEX.PHP on line 99

Warning: mysql_free_result(): supplied argument is not a valid MySQL result resource in /home/.heathcote/webcat/planetcatfish.com/catelog/loricari/INDEX.PHP on line 108

I presume these can be ignored?

They're fixed now although a lot of bits of v1 pages now populate data into v2, therefore if there's an illegal character snuck in a v1 catelog entry then (a) you'll get a similar error to that above in the catelog v1 page and (b) the catelog v2 page won't have species info. in it.

I've written a function now to correctly format scientific names, they should be better.

Data population is done on a trickle basis, essentially access the data in V1 and it is populated (or sometimes updates) into v2.

Surely you can automate the data transfer from one database to the other [I understand, however, that you may not want to do that right now...]

Yes, however this way I have a view of database load becuase the currently accessed catelog v1 updates the database. I have a fear of developing v2 and finding out that the database can't cope with the traffic.

Baby steps...

V2 has now been moved into close to its final resting place.

http://localhost:1964/catelog/c2_index.php

I have now added common names and synonym pages as well a fixing the images pages which took days for me to work out!

Also, the v2 page shows the number of families, genera, species and images that have been transferred over into the new database.

Looks very nice.

Here's a couple of buggettes...

Common names of Scobinancistrus aureatus:
L014Goldie PlecoSunshine Pleco
Shouldn't that be
L014, Goldie Pleco, Sunshine Pleco

Also, the precision of the temperatures:
If we only give whole numbers in Celsius scale, it would probably be fare to round/chop the decimals on Fahrenheit scale...

One thing I _DON'T like about the new common names is that you can't find ALL common names. I've used this sometimes is to search on the whole page for, say "Woodcat" to find the different types of "Woodcat" that are in the Cat-eLog. Perhaps there is a different way to do this...

One of the truly delightful things about V2 and the fact that the database is now online, is that I can easily rustle up this...

Believe me, this is just a crumb on the plate of what I have in store...

When using the Cat-eLog menu to choose "Scientific name by family" to get to the Pimelodidae family, you don't get the Pimelodidae but the Akysidae. Loricariidae on the other hand works just fine. I didn't try the other families...

Also, when viewing a Pimelodidae, I can't get back to the Genus list from the species view by clicking the genus name on the top of the page. This also doesn't work on Acanthicus adonis, so I presume it's Cat-eLog-wide. I quite like that feature, but if it's not often used, then I understand if you've decided to remove it. [There is still the "See thumbnails of all Acanthicus speices at the bottom of the page"]. I use this feature particularly when trying to match a fish with a picture, so I know (for example) that it's a Pimelodus species, and I'll flick back and forth between the Genus page and the species view. Not having to scroll down to the bottom helps speed this up...

It seems like the new script doesn't work well when you try to link to a "incorrect" species - say [note: intentional mistaek!] The result is an entirely white page, rather than one showing "This species doesn't exist".

Yeah, but I though it was cluttered otherwise. The half name link we previously had was a design no-no, so I have now added the feature back in but designed properly.

The catelog pages in V2 are all central single dynamic pages, so I change one, I change the whole catelog. No more having to changes thousands of pages!!!

That sounds much betterer!

I guess it takes a little while before these latest changes filter through - still, or was that just because there were MANY pages to update?

Once I upload them to the internet, they are instantly effective across the whole cat-elog, BUT, you might have to refresh the browser or even force-empty its cache to pick them up.
