Catfish burns house down

Post by Chrysichthys »

There was an article in the Times today about a catfish which was 'notoriously belligerent' and while fighting with an Oscar, splashed water, which got into the tank lights and started a fire which burned down the house.

At least, that's what they think happened. The catfish was killed by the fire, and there was a photo of its charred remains. The article didn't say what species it was, but from the photo, and from its willingness to tackle a ten-inch Oscar, I think it was most likely a Hemibagrus.

Can anyone suggest a possible moral for this story?

The answer is, they should have had an RCD. For about $10 U.S. they could have saved their fish, their house, and potentially, their lives.

The photo sure wasn't much help in terms of I.D.ing it. I forgot to mention that the catfish was named Kipper; a minor detail like that makes the story more believable.

Well done kipper (who I think was a Learius sp.).

I'm glad the children are safe.

FOUR Oscars in one tank! No wonder Kipper was a bit ticked off. I think this is close to a Darwin Award nominee, but not quite. She fell just short, thankfully for those two children.
