ID of SA catfish... From SE Brazil.

Hi all.

A fellow hobbyist sent me this picture, and I have no idea about the ID of this fish. It was collected by him two years ago in a waterfall near the Town of "Oliveira", Minas Gerais State, SE Brazil. It is 80 mm (3 1/5 inches) long, BTW. Here's the pic:

Any idea?

Well, it looks like a Microglanis, but I can't say which species.

hi, i agree with noren, i think is a species of Microglanis, maybe a Microglanis iheringiBumblebee Catfish is the common name..

The coloration suggests a young Pseudopimelodus, rather than Microglanis.

microglanis doesn't have the long lobes on the caudal like this fish, Bathrachoglanis (the new name for old geezers like "Pseudopimelodus raninus") neither.

it looks like a close relative or a youngster of Pseudopimelodus bufonius; check this out what to expect when it's big.

it will NOT stay small and peaceful like Microglanis, but grow up to a fairly large voracious piscivore, just so you know

I thought about Microglanis at first, mainly because of its coloration and the fact that this specimen is 2-years old and still rather small (80 mm). Should a young Pseudopimelodus bufonius be this size at this age? Is it a slow-growing species? But it surely looks like P. bufonius to me...

As far as I know the collection site (Sao Francisco river basin in southeastern Brazil) makes either M. iheringi or P. bufonius unlikely.
A quick search of fishbase suggests the only Pseudopimelodus recorded in the area is Pseudopimelodus charus (and no Microglanis have been recorded there at all).

EDIT: I found a picture of P. charus (http://catfishstudygroup.org/pdf/wasp_cats.pdf scroll down to page 3) and it is almost identical to the fish in this thread.

I didn't even know that P. charus existed until I searched fishbase, so I really do not know.
That your fish is 2 years old and only 8 centimeters would to me suggest that either the final size is smaller than the cited 20 cm, or that it's a slow-growing species. But that's just conjecture on my part.

On a related note, I see that P. charus does not have a cat-eLog entry or any photo in Fishbase. If you could take some more photos I'm sure both Fishbase and Planetcatfish would be happy to add them to their databases.
For Fishbase I'd suggest mailing [email protected]; I do not offhand know where to send photos for planetcatfish - anyone know?
