Yes, a small group of 5 would do. I won't say it'll die by itself, but it does much better when accompanied by its own kind. Which species do you have btw?

I'd say they really NEED a group.

the toughest of all the "African Glass Catfish" is Schilbe mystus and even this one is a very sorry fish if you keep it by itself.
there's a fair chance it will pine away and eventually become lethargic and die.
with any other species of this family this is a certaincy (!) and NOT a chance.....

Parailia, Physailia, Pareutropius/Eutropiellus (or whatever genus they belong in these days, I can't keep up) MUST be kept in a shoal and 5 is too low; true shoaling starts at 8, but 10-12 is better.

I've kept several of these species for years and they're among the most social fishes as catfish go; they really need speciesmembers to hang out with.

then you should keep it in a good shoal of 10 or so, or choose another species to keep.

trying otherwise (single or duo etc) is a sure way to kill it.

Just noticed that the new ed of Skelton has this fish as Schilbe intermedius with S. mystus and Eutropius depressirostris as jr. synonyms.
