African glass catfish
Do african glass catfish NEED a partner or can they live by themselves... I had 2 but the other died in the filter overnight somehow...
Do I need to get another few to keep him content?

I'd say they really NEED a group.
the toughest of all the "African Glass Catfish" is Schilbe mystus and even this one is a very sorry fish if you keep it by itself.
there's a fair chance it will pine away and eventually become lethargic and die.
with any other species of this family this is a certaincy (!) and NOT a chance.....
Parailia, Physailia, Pareutropius/Eutropiellus (or whatever genus they belong in these days, I can't keep up) MUST be kept in a shoal and 5 is too low; true shoaling starts at 8, but 10-12 is better.
I've kept several of these species for years and they're among the most social fishes as catfish go; they really need speciesmembers to hang out with.

Just noticed that the new ed of Skelton has this fish as Schilbe intermedius with S. mystus and Eutropius depressirostris as jr. synonyms.the toughest of all the "African Glass Catfish" is Schilbe mystus
