I got a couple pairs of these guys a few weeks ago. Very entertaining little guys. Have been keeping them well fed and have been doing alot of water changing lately. hoping to trigger a spawn. Took a snap of a male and female this evening. Thought you guys might like to see.
R. wui is a lovely fish. I kept and bred it a couple of years ago, but haven't seen it for sale since then.
That female looks gravid to me, so even though the male is not in breeding coloration, I think breeding will happen soon.
I assume the male has already dug out a cave?
You'll know they have spawned because the male will suddenly just disappear - he seals himself in with the eggs in the cave, and doesn't open the entrance to the cave again until the eggs have hatched.
Once the larvae leaves the cave the parents will consider them food, but if you have plenty of hiding places some will probably survive.
The other male is colored up. I cannot get a photo though, because he does not stop moving. I think there will be a spawn soon as well. He's contstantly digging, and defending his cave. Both the females are gravid, as well. Thanks for the tip on the parents becoming predators of the fry. I'll have to suck them out with a turkey baster i guess.
