Liosomadorus oncinus - Problem with one!
Hello guys i'd like your opinion on this:
Today at the shop i stumbled over a bunch of dorads...turning out to be Oncas...about 6-7 cm for 16 euro...now i know they are from rio negro...but im also the opinion that 16 is really cheap for them...dyou think they could stand a ph7kh7gh14 tank without nitrates? Or better say will the fish and i be happy with that? I always thought Doradidaes were pretty undemanding concerning water chemistry if it is w/o NOx!?

Shouldn't be a problem. I've seen them kept in similar water conditions as you described. With that kind of price, are you sure that these aren't <i>Liosomadoras morrowi</i> instead of <i>L. oncinus</i>? The former are usually offered at around that price, while the latter usually go for 2-3 times that...

Don't really know. I haven't kept small <i>L. morrowi</i> before. I have two <i>L. morrowi</i> right now (about 10 cm long), and they seem to get along well in the slightly hard water here in Ann Arbor. Not fussy eaters, plus they get along well with tankamtes (<i>Mystus leucophasis</i>, <i>Pimelodus blochii</i>, <i>Synodontis nigrita</i> and <i>Neolissochilus</i> sp.) and each other, save for the occasional fight.

Hi!
They seemed ok and now swim in my 125 litre tank. I saw them yesterday both are still doing fine. they roamed the tank and ate some cyclops and bloodworms. They have become much lighter in color with more contrast than at the shop where they were almost completely brown with the dark spots.
Very nice ones im glad i got them!

I have a problem with one of them!
Today i realized that hes breathing very heavily and one of his eyes is dull.
He also has trouble staying down always drifting to the surface sometimes bottom up...hes not looking good and i have no clue what it is...i fear that i cant save him.
Ph was 6.8-6.9 today so high ph shouldnt be a problem...i guess the fish was allready sick when i bought him cauz everybody told me how hardy they were...hope i can save the poor fellow...

I hope your oncinus makes it.
I had an equally harrowing experience when I bought my <i>L. morrowi</i>. The person whom I bought the fish from (not a dealer, she was just getting rid of them) double bagged the fish, but they either managed to puncture the bags with their spines or the postal service fouled up and broke the bags somehow.
Anyway, they arrived literally gasping as all of the water had drained out. I thought they weren't going to make it when I put them in the tank, but they recovered after a few hours and have been doing OK since (it's been almost two years since I got them). It gave me a real scare, but I think the cooler air temperatures (about 10-15 degrees Celsius) at that time of the year actually helped to keep them alive long enough for them to make it.

Hi!
after thinking a bit and talking to yann again i decided to do a preventive nifurpirinol bath for 30 mintes...the small dude wasnt very happy about it. He was a bit shaken after the treatment, but showed no ill effects later on. He even came out to feed on white mosquito larvae and gamarus...so far it looks good!
