This is not a catfish!

Post by Tom »

I know this is not a catfish but I'm not sure where else to look. A gentleman who brings in African fish got these mixed in. There are 2 about 2-3" long. They are elongated, beige, have a black stripe that runs from head to tail. They are supposedly from one of the African rivers. The thing that stands out is they have a double dorsal like Perches do. I've looked in every book I have but no luck. Unfortunately no pic, but can maybe try to get one next time I see him. Also they swim midwater.

You could Google on Gobies, sleepers, gudgeons or Eleotridae.

I immediately thought of a Butis species, but I knew they were from Asia.
To my great surprise some are also native to Africa (source: FishBase).
Have a look.
