I assume this is Ancistrus sp(3)

Post by bslindgren »

I bought two of these, and assume they are female Ancistrus sp(3) Can someone confirm? I have included 6 photos. They aren't great, but these fish tend to be less than willing to pose. All are of the same female I think. One has a light-coloured area at the bottom and top corners of the caudal fin, otherwise they look identical. I included a less than stellar picture that shows the dorsal fin, if that is of any help. In certain light, the scale edges on the side of the tail irridesce red - surprisingly pretty - you can see it a bit on the top picture by the adipose fin. Sorry for the poor quality/off colour of some of these.

I think these are female Ancistrus triradiatus.
Thanks Silurus. I can see why now that I look at the pictures. I wonder what my male is then? I don't have a good picture of him because he rarely comes out. He looks like this:

Unfortunately the "bristles" don't show very well in that picture - I only got one chance and the focus wasn't quite right. I'll have to try to get better pictures of him somehow. He seems to have a larger dorsal fin (longer with more rays) than the females, but I don't have a picture to verify that impression. He's from the same LFS but I bought him about 6 months ago. The females came from a shipm, ent of about 10 they got in, with just one or two males and the rest females.
