It is a great idea, but also very new at PC, my understanding is that it is still in the experimental stages and I am sure will develop much further as time goes on.

It's only as good as the data in there. Have a word with Mats as he has plugged in 100% of the data and written nearly all of the code.

It would help if you could be more accurate in telling us what you mean by "inaccurate"?

I'm no ichthyologist but I was just looking for fish to put in my xingu biotope and and platydoras costatus did not come up and I am sure that they are found there.
I know this sounds a bit anal but I then continued to look and found a few other discrepancies.
All hail Mats for putting the information in, not a job I would like to do and a fabulous job he has done, but 'boitope o philes' and anally re tentative geeks, such as myself could be misled.
I think it has more to do with the way it works or I should just shut up and forget about it.
For the site is the best in the web, and not just because it is for catfish , but the whole way it operates, it is far superior than commercial sites for big businesses, I just see it as a shame to lose accuracy over such an important set of facts, if these facts are not accurate I see that there is no point in being accurate about anything.
Sorry to be a wingeing fool.

It's probably an expectation thing.

If you clicked on the Xingu link, you'll get fish restricted to the Xingu. If you click on the level up (amazon), you'll get amazon basin fishes which will include the more widely distributed .

However, it'd be worth checking with Mat this is roughly the way it works.

You should get "Xingu" if you go by "Lower Amazon", but the other way around doesn't work. I could sit down (for several days) and add all tributaries that are known to contain the fishes. But it's hard work, especially as a lot of fish are listed as "Lower Amazon", rather than specifically Tocantins, Xingu, etc.

If you look at fish from Xingu (for example), you will see that there is a list of "Amazon->Lower Amazon->Xingu", for example. So you can see the relationship in the list of rivers.

Or you can use the list of rivers:
http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/bofw_tree.php

Code: Select all

Amazon basin South America
   .....
    Lower Amazon basin Brazil
        Xingu river Brazil
            Iriri river Brazil
                Curuá river Brazil
            Upper Xingu river Brazil
                Culuene river Brazil
            Lower Xingu river Brazil
        Tocantins river Brazil
            Lower Tocantins river Brazil
                Araguaia river Brazil
                    Upper Araguaia river Brazil
                        Mortes river Brazil
            Upper Tocantins river Brazil
            Passa Três cave
As you look at this, you can see the relationships between rivers and their tributaries/sections.

Yeah for sure, it wasn't a gripe just an observation.
Thanks
