...and happened to be mammals...We'd call them Beavers! Here's a few shots of some beaver "dam" age.

Big tree completely "ringed":

One really brave Father-in-Law:

This one was cut by the beavers, healed some, was felled by the beavers and then trimmed by the county...leaving a visually interesting stump:

I think I found my answer...but I'm certainly not a butterfly expert...
