L270 and tank sizes

Hi there

I'v e very recently accquired a 95 litre 90cm long x 29.5cm wide x 36cm deep tank and I was wondering if this would be a big enough home for a L270 Chocolate zebra plec?

If so, what [if anything] could I keep him with? I'm thinking small fishes

I have lovely soft water with virtualy no detectable GH, KH of barely 3 [ I buffer my main tank with bicarb] and I'd be setting up the 95 litre with a fishless cycle.

I'd love a L270 but only iof my new tank is big enough

Any advice?

Should be fine with a small group of L270 [something like 5 or so], assuming you have a number of suitable hiding places [caves, crevices, roots and such].

Good current is also a good idea.

Small tetras are good companions, and will make the fish feel more safe (they see the small fish and think "oh, they are ok, so there are obviously no vicious predators around").

I'll be setting the tank up from scratch so provding the tank is big enough for a L270, it will be pretty much tailor made for him with everything else fitting in around him

I have some lovely emerald eye rasboras [ 6 of them] in my main tank, i was thinking of transferring them over and thinking of upping them to a group of about 10/12.

I'll need to give it bit of thought tetra wise but it's good to know I can fit an L270in there

Yes, rasboras or tetras are both fine. The key is "small and unagressive" [and preferrably not "breeding like rabbits" - so no mixed sex groups of livebearers for example].

I have black neons and redeye tetras in a couple of my tanks, 10-12 of each, and they are "nice". But what I like isn't necessarily what you'll like - different people like different things.

I think you should aim to get a group of L270 - a male and one or two females at the least - that way you have a good chance of breeding them - they are probably not very hard to breed.

Yes, they are not very hard to breed. If you give them right conditions, like their own tank with no competition of other plecos, right caves, they will spawn regularly. From my experience strong current is not so important (but the water must be well oxygenated), as caves of right size. I have had a group of L270 for about a year without any spawn, but after adding new cave they started to spawn in 2 weeks. Now they spawn regularly every 4-5 weeks, so far I have 8 spawns from them (from just 1 female!).
