S.nigriventris stocking
S.nigriventris stocking
I've kept this species a couple of times when I was younger, then moved to the larger species. I'm feeling a nostalgic resurgence in my desire to keep these again. I have an empty 40-breeder (36''x18''x16'').
I'd like a decent sized group of these, along with perhaps congo tetras.
This combo should work, but I'm curious what you think stocking should look like?
I'm open to alternatives and/or additions, as well.

Re: S.nigriventris stocking
Even though the S.nigriventris would do okay.... I think the Congo Tetras would be too aggressive when it comes to feeding time as S.nigriventris can be a little shy when it comes to going out for food....also this size tank(too small) would not show the Congo's at their best
In a smaller tank Pareutropius buffei would be good combined with S.nigriventris and they would be not too difficult to find
10 or 12 of each would be nice
I presently have all three species

I think Birger is on the right track - the congos would perhaps be a little boisterous & you'd need a hard, sinking food that they would avoid to ensure the nigriventris got their share. A larger than average group of nigriventris would be superb - it has long been on my list of things to do since seeing a photo of a hobbyist tank with about 35 in as the sole occupants (as opposed to a lfs or wholesaler tank with loads in as it isn't the same!)
If you wanted other fish (non-cats) a tetra or barb there are loads available, albeit some very rarely which are not as active as congos - there are plenty of books or the 'net to give you ideas

Re: S.nigriventris stocking
Great suggestions! Thanks very much.
I'm thinking a larger group of the upside-down cats would be awesome. It was kind of what I was going for, but was hesitant on a species-only tank. I'm sure I can track down a better alternative to the congos, if need be.

Yes - i sort of know what you mean
What i meant was if flakes were offered the congos would eat them all leaving the synos nothing but if for example, shrimp sticks were offered they would be initially hard & sink to the bottom for the synos, some flake could be fed in tandem to keep the congos occupied type-of-thing - it was badly explained but yes congod can be ravenous!!!
