HELP! with breeding Albino Corydoras paleatus

Post by hoplo »

Hi all,

We have 18 female and 7 male Albino Corydoras paleatus .

Every time we spawn a female Albino Corydoras paleatus with a normal coloured maleCorydoras paleatus we never get any baby albinos. We only get baby albinos when we put two albinos together. We have tried with most of the females, using both albino and normal coloured males with each female.

Do any of you know why?

in most cases, albinism is the result of failing to make colours by the fish

This will only be the case, if both genes for a given step in the proces are missing or defect. Normal coloured fish have 1, or both, genes correct

If both genes are OK in the normal coloured male, all it offspring (which will have for any given gene 1 from dad, and 1 from mom) will have 1 missing, or defect gene, and 1 normal one

This normal one will provide enough colour to get coloured fry

Breeding with these F1 fry will get albinism back: As both F1 parents have albinism genes, these genes have a chance (25 %, after all, half of dad genes are albinism, and half of moms genes. Both need to be albinism, thus 1/2 * 1/2 = 1/4) to meet each other and produce albinism

It is, however, possible albinism is due to more than 1 gene. In that case 25 % is not te be expected, but the general lines will still apply
