Panaque ID

Post by jippo »

Hi

Can anyone ID this Panaque? It's 7cm long (TL). I bought it as L-271 but I still have no idea what it is. I have kept it over year now and it has been growing maybe 1-2cm since I got it.

Panaque maccus aka Clown Pleco aka Ringlet Pleco and who knows how many other names. Pretty much the most common of the small inexpensive plecos.

Thanks for answers apistomaster and Janne.

So this fish will be mystery forever? Is origin of this fish only way to solve its identity? Or is it teeth? Sorry I'm not so pro with plecos.

Origin will help reduce the options, but it's not certain to solve the mystery. In the future, scientists may describe the relevant species, and the description MAY solve the puzzle too - but it may still be difficult to tell them apart even with a scientific description, for example some descriptions use internal diagnostics [such as shape/size of bones in the fish].
